Steve > Lonely Road As I walked through the small village of Meskine in Cameroon I am over-sensitive to my rather large camera. With my arm naturally hanging down my side I secretly took this picture. The composition isn't great but it captures the feeling.
Steve > In A Moment As I approached this mother and son I wanted to drop down on one knee and take pictures the entire time they passed by but unfortunately that isn't culturally polite. Instead I just walked past them until the boy called out to me in an unknown language with a wonderful smile. I took the picture and an instant later his mother called out for him to catch up, or so I understand as he ran off.
Steve > Nameless I drove by her earlier in the day as she sat by her vending table outside her home. The market is down the street and I almost expected to see a paper sign asking for $0.10 for a cup of lemonade. She may not make much more but instead of pocket change it counts toward their salary. I couldn't talk with her. I held up my camera and smiled. If she smiled back then I would take the picture. Thankfully she smiled. Most likely she is Fulani and remains one of the nameless unreached. But now she has a face.
Steve > Beauty I saw her smile from a distance. Leaning against her mudbrick home the other kids played in the street. As I approached the other kids looked at me and wanted in the picture. Again I held up my camera and smiled. Absolutely adorable. When I showed them their picture on my camera they laughed and giggled until an adult called from inside the house and they vanished.

Steve > Living Color The Sahel is not a naturally beautiful place. The earthen homes and dusty roads leave only thorn covered trees to dot the landscape with color. It is the people who wear the bright colors. Bold reds, deep golds and peaceful blues drape the women.
Steve > One of Many She is one of the 103 children that French humanitarian workers attempted to kidnap in October 2007. They were brought to safely live on a Swiss-French orphanage where we were living in Abéché. We shared a meal together and then this brief moment passed before life kept moving and she was finally return to her family.
Steve > In the Eyes He was also one of the 103 children that was almost kidnapped.
